Why visit Beijing?

Few cities in China contain as many internationally recognized historical landmarks as Beijing.

The Great Wall, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace are among the city's most famous attractions, but Beijing's appeal goes far beyond major landmarks.

Traditional hutongs reveal a more intimate side of the city, while local restaurants, markets, parks and neighborhoods provide opportunities to experience everyday Beijing life.

For travelers interested in understanding both China's past and present, Beijing is difficult to replace.

Top Attractions in Beijing

1. The Great Wall of China

For many international travelers, seeing the Great Wall of China is one of the most anticipated moments of a trip to China.

Several sections of the Great Wall can be visited from Beijing.

Mutianyu is popular with international visitors for its restored watchtowers, mountain scenery and relatively comfortable visitor facilities.

Badaling is one of the best-known and most accessible sections, while other sections may appeal to travelers looking for a quieter or more hiking-oriented experience.

Standing on the Wall and watching it disappear across the mountains is one of Beijing's most memorable travel experiences.

2. The Forbidden City

Located in the heart of Beijing, the Forbidden City was the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Today, it forms the core of the Palace Museum and contains an extraordinary collection of historic halls, courtyards, gates and cultural relics.

Walking through the Forbidden City provides one of the clearest ways to understand the scale, architecture and symbolism of imperial China.

3. Tiananmen Square

Located immediately south of the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square is one of Beijing's most recognizable urban landmarks.

Because it sits close to several major historical sites, it can easily be combined with a visit to the Forbidden City as part of a full day exploring central Beijing.

4. Temple of Heaven

The Temple of Heaven is one of Beijing's finest examples of traditional Chinese ceremonial architecture.

Historically, emperors visited the complex to conduct important rituals and pray for good harvests.

Today, the surrounding park also provides a glimpse into local life. In the morning, you may see Beijing residents exercising, practicing tai chi, singing or gathering with friends.

5. Summer Palace

The Summer Palace combines classical Chinese gardens, imperial architecture, hills and Kunming Lake.

Compared with the grand scale of the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace feels more relaxed and scenic.

Walking beside the lake, exploring traditional pavilions and viewing the landscape from Longevity Hill can provide a pleasant change of pace during a busy Beijing itinerary.

Explore Beijing's Hutongs

Beijing is not only about grand monuments.

To discover a more personal side of the city, spend some time exploring its traditional hutongs.

These narrow lanes and courtyard neighborhoods preserve traces of old Beijing life and create a striking contrast with the city's modern business districts.

Areas around Shichahai, Drum Tower and Bell Tower are popular starting points for travelers interested in exploring traditional neighborhoods.

What to Eat in Beijing

Food is an important part of discovering Beijing.

The city's most famous dish is undoubtedly Peking Duck, known for its crisp skin and traditional serving style.

But there is much more to try.

Depending on your tastes, look for zhajiangmian (noodles with soybean paste), Beijing-style hot pot, dumplings, traditional snacks and local breakfast foods.

For international visitors, trying both famous restaurants and smaller neighborhood eateries can reveal very different sides of Beijing's food culture.

How Many Days Do You Need in Beijing?

For most first-time international visitors, 4 to 5 days is a comfortable amount of time for Beijing.

A possible itinerary is:

Day 1 — Arrive in Beijing
Airport or railway station transfer → Hotel check-in → Easy evening exploration.

Day 2 — Imperial Beijing
Tiananmen Square → Forbidden City → Jingshan Park → Traditional Beijing neighborhoods.

Day 3 — The Great Wall
Full-day trip to the Great Wall → Return to Beijing.

Day 4 — Temple of Heaven & Summer Palace
Temple of Heaven → Local Beijing experience → Summer Palace.

Day 5 — Hutongs & Local Culture
Hutong neighborhoods → Drum and Bell Towers / Shichahai → Food experience → Departure or continue to the next Chinese destination.

For travelers with additional time, Beijing can comfortably support a longer stay.

Best Time to Visit Beijing

Beijing has four distinct seasons, and each offers a different experience.

Spring (April–May) generally brings comfortable temperatures and is suitable for sightseeing.

Autumn (September–October) is particularly popular because of mild temperatures and often clearer skies, making it a good season for visiting the Great Wall and other outdoor attractions.

Summer (June–August) is warm to hot and is also a busy travel period.

Winter (December–February) can be cold and dry, but crowds at some attractions may be smaller. Snow can occasionally transform the Forbidden City and Great Wall into beautiful winter landscapes.

How to Get to Beijing

As China's capital and one of its major international transportation hubs, Beijing is easy to connect with destinations across China and around the world.

International travelers generally arrive through Beijing's major airports, while China's extensive high-speed railway network connects Beijing with cities including Shanghai, Xi'an, Chengdu and many other destinations.

This makes Beijing particularly suitable as the first or final stop of a multi-city China itinerary.

Beijing Travel Tips

Reserve major attractions in advance.
Popular attractions can have reservation requirements and daily visitor limits. Check current booking rules before your visit.

Wear comfortable shoes.
The Forbidden City, Summer Palace and Great Wall can involve considerable walking.

Avoid planning too much in one day.
Beijing is a large city and distances between attractions can be significant.

Allow a full day for the Great Wall.
Rather than combining it with too many city attractions, give yourself enough time to enjoy the experience.

Prepare for seasonal weather.
Beijing can be hot in summer and cold in winter, so clothing should match the season.

Beijing + Xi'an: A Classic First Trip to China

For travelers interested in Chinese history, Beijing and Xi'an make a natural combination.

Beijing offers imperial palaces, the Great Wall and the political and cultural landmarks of the capital, while Xi'an introduces travelers to an earlier chapter of Chinese history through the Terracotta Warriors, ancient city walls and Silk Road heritage.

With China's high-speed railway network, the two destinations can be conveniently included in the same itinerary.
