Visa-Free Travel and Better Connectivity Make China More Accessible

Updated October 9, 2026 · SEEK CHINA TRAVEL

China is continuing to improve travel services for international visitors, with expanded visa-free arrangements, digital payment support and more accessible tourism services forming part of the country's long-term inbound tourism strategy.

At a media conference on September 24, 2026, Chinese tourism authorities outlined plans to further improve the visitor experience during the 2026–2030 development period.

A Growing Focus on International Tourism

According to figures presented by China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the country recorded approximately 154 million inbound tourist trips in 2025, representing a 17.1% increase from the previous year.

Spending by inbound travelers exceeded US$130 billion.

These figures include the broader inbound tourism market and should not be confused with arrivals by foreign passport holders alone.

China's tourism authorities have also set a target of 190 million annual inbound tourist visits by 2030.

Easier Entry for Eligible Travelers

Expanded visa-free arrangements have been an important part of China's approach to international travel.

Eligible travelers from a growing number of countries can enter China without obtaining a conventional tourist visa in advance, subject to the conditions of the relevant policy.

China also offers a 240-hour visa-free transit arrangement for qualifying passengers traveling onward to a third country or region.

However, travelers should remember that different visa-free programs have different requirements. Eligibility depends on factors including nationality, itinerary, travel purpose and length of stay.

Improving Payments and Everyday Travel Services

China is also working to make everyday services more accessible to overseas visitors.

Authorities have announced initiatives covering international payment methods, multilingual digital services, transportation, accommodation and departure tax refunds.

These improvements are particularly relevant for first-time visitors who may be unfamiliar with Chinese mobile payment platforms and local travel systems.

Before departure, international travelers should still prepare a suitable payment method, check mobile connectivity and understand how to access essential travel information.

Beyond China's Major Gateway Cities

As travel becomes more convenient, international visitors can explore destinations beyond Beijing and Shanghai.

Cities such as Xi'an and Chengdu offer history, culture and cuisine, while Zhangjiajie and Guilin are known for their distinctive natural landscapes.

Travelers can also combine urban experiences with rural scenery, cultural heritage and regional food traditions.

What This Means for Future China Trips

The continuing improvements to inbound travel services could make multi-destination itineraries more practical for international visitors.

Travelers planning a journey in 2026 or 2027 should review current entry rules, allow enough time between destinations and choose transportation based on their preferred travel pace.

SEEK CHINA TRAVEL (SCT) provides private and tailor-made China travel planning for international visitors, helping travelers combine destinations, experiences and local arrangements into a personalized journey.
