Chongqing, one of China's most distinctive mountain cities, recorded a 34.4% year-on-year increase in inbound overnight visitor arrivals during the 2026 National Day holiday, according to the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Culture and Tourism.
The city welcomed approximately 23,579 inbound overnight visitor arrivals during the seven-day holiday, highlighting growing interest in Chongqing as a destination for international travel.
Chongqing's Popular Attractions Draw Holiday Crowds
The city's monitored A-rated tourist attractions recorded approximately 9.1 million visits during the holiday.
Among the most visited destinations were Hongyadong Folk Customs Area, Ciqikou Ancient Town and Wulong Karst Tourism Area.
These attractions represent different sides of Chongqing, from illuminated riverside architecture and traditional streets to spectacular natural landscapes.
Why Chongqing Appeals to International Visitors
Chongqing offers an unusual combination of dramatic geography, urban culture and natural scenery.
Built across hills and river valleys, the city is known for its layered streets, bridges, elevated railways and striking nighttime skyline.
Visitors can experience the famous Liziba monorail station, explore the lively Jiefangbei district, enjoy local hotpot and discover the historic atmosphere of Ciqikou Ancient Town.
Beyond the city center, Wulong offers limestone formations, natural bridges and mountain landscapes that contrast with Chongqing's dense urban environment.
Nighttime Experiences and Cultural Tourism
Nighttime sightseeing remained an important part of Chongqing's holiday tourism activity.
Popular experiences included river cruises, illuminated city landmarks, cultural performances and evening visits to historic streets.
For first-time international visitors, a guided evening itinerary can provide a convenient introduction to the city's geography and local culture.
Combining Chongqing with Wulong
Travelers with several days available can combine central Chongqing with Wulong Karst Tourism Area.
A four-day itinerary can include city sightseeing, local food experiences, natural scenery and flexible arrival or departure arrangements.
For families and travelers seeking a more relaxed pace, private transportation can make it easier to move between attractions and avoid unnecessary transfers.
