Beyond Sightseeing: Why International Travelers Are Choosing Authentic China Experiences

Updated October 12, 2026 · SEEK CHINA TRAVEL

China is becoming more than a destination for famous landmarks and spectacular scenery. International travelers are increasingly looking for meaningful cultural encounters, local traditions, and opportunities to experience everyday life in China.

During the 2026 National Day holiday, new travel booking data highlighted a shift in how overseas visitors explore the country. From traditional Chinese clothing and cultural performances to neighborhood walks and hands-on workshops, authentic experiences are becoming an important part of China travel.

Inbound Day Tour Bookings Surge More Than 400%

According to data from Trip.com reported by Chinese state media on October 8, bookings for inbound one-day tours during the combined Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday period increased by more than 400% year on year.

Bookings for scenic attraction tickets also rose by more than 220%, while cultural attractions accounted for approximately 43% of inbound attraction bookings, compared with around 32% in 2024.

These figures suggest that international travelers are increasingly interested in discovering China's history, traditions, and local culture alongside its iconic tourist attractions.

The statistics reflect bookings recorded by the travel platform rather than China's entire inbound tourism market.

From Famous Landmarks to Everyday Chinese Life

For many first-time visitors, the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Terracotta Warriors, and Zhangjiajie's towering sandstone mountains remain essential highlights.

But the experience of traveling in China is evolving.

Instead of simply visiting a landmark and taking photographs, more international visitors are looking for opportunities to connect with the places they explore.

In Beijing, travelers can walk through traditional hutong neighborhoods, explore local markets, and discover the city's historic architecture.

In Chengdu, visitors can enjoy Sichuan cuisine, experience traditional tea culture, and explore neighborhoods where everyday local life unfolds.

In Shanghai, historic streets, traditional gardens, and contemporary urban culture offer opportunities to experience both old and modern China.

These experiences allow travelers to discover the stories, flavors, and traditions behind the destinations they visit.

Traditional Chinese Culture Becomes a Travel Highlight

Cultural activities are attracting growing attention from overseas visitors.

At Shanghai's Yu Garden, some international tourists are choosing to wear traditional Chinese hanfu clothing and participate in Chinese-style photography sessions.

In Zhangjiajie, cultural performances such as Charming Xiangxi introduce visitors to the traditions of local ethnic communities through music, dance, and theatrical storytelling.

According to an October 8 report by CGTN, the Charming Xiangxi theater had welcomed more than 140,000 overseas visitors by the end of September 2026.

Meanwhile, Jingdezhen, a city internationally known for its porcelain heritage, offers opportunities to learn about traditional ceramics and participate in pottery workshops.

These activities give visitors a chance to engage with Chinese culture rather than only observe it.

Why Private and Tailor-Made Tours Are Well Suited to This Trend

As travelers become more interested in personalized experiences, flexible itineraries can help them explore China beyond a standard sightseeing schedule.

A private tour allows visitors to balance famous attractions with activities that match their personal interests.

For example, a family visiting Beijing might combine the Great Wall and Forbidden City with a hutong walk and a traditional cultural activity.

A couple exploring Chengdu could combine a panda visit with a local food experience and a relaxed afternoon at a traditional teahouse.

Travelers visiting Zhangjiajie might pair the National Forest Park with a cultural performance or an exploration of local traditions.

These are examples of how a tailor-made itinerary can be designed, rather than fixed inclusions in every tour.

For international travelers, thoughtful planning can also help with transportation, communication, attraction reservations, and managing time between destinations.
