Shanghai is continuing to improve transportation and tourism services for international visitors, according to information released at a municipal government press conference on October 13, 2026.
The initiatives focus on making airport transfers, luggage storage, public transportation, and sightseeing more convenient for travelers arriving in China.
Easier International Airport Transfers
Shanghai Pudong International Airport has upgraded its international transfer facilities and services, including improved connections between airlines and terminals, expanded passenger rest facilities, and additional shower amenities.
These improvements are intended to make Shanghai a more convenient gateway for international visitors traveling to China or connecting to other destinations.
More Convenient Luggage Storage and City Transport
Shanghai officials reported that approximately 6,200 public luggage lockers are available across the city's metro network.
Six major metro lines serving key commercial districts also offer regular extended weekend operating hours.
For visitors who want to explore Shanghai without carrying their luggage throughout the day, these facilities can provide greater flexibility when planning sightseeing activities.
New Travel Experiences for International Visitors
Shanghai is also developing services that connect transportation with tourism.
Initiatives highlighted by officials include complimentary half-day sightseeing experiences for eligible airport transit passengers, tourism transport passes, visitor-oriented travel cards, and improved sightseeing connections along the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek.
Some services are already operating, while others are being expanded or further developed. Travelers should confirm availability and eligibility before making arrangements.
What This Means for Travelers Planning a China Trip
Shanghai is one of China's major international arrival gateways and a popular starting point for multi-city journeys.
Improved airport services and transportation connections may make it easier for travelers to combine Shanghai with destinations such as Beijing, Xi'an, Hangzhou, and other parts of China.
