Zhangjiajie Sees Strong Demand from South Korean Travelers During China's National Day Holiday

Updated October 10, 2026 · SEEK CHINA TRAVEL

Zhangjiajie, one of China's most spectacular natural destinations, continues to attract international attention. During the 2026 National Day holiday, South Korean travelers represented a significant share of foreign arrivals recorded at Zhangjiajie's border checkpoint, highlighting the destination's strong appeal among overseas visitors.

According to information published by the Hunan Provincial Government on October 9, Zhangjiajie's border checkpoint recorded more than 14,000 inbound and outbound passenger crossings during the holiday period. Foreign travelers accounted for approximately 97% of these crossings.

Among foreign travelers entering through the checkpoint, 81.5% were South Korean nationals, demonstrating the importance of South Korea as a source market for Zhangjiajie.

The report also indicated that 99.3% of foreign arrivals were eligible for applicable visa-free entry policies.

These figures refer specifically to border checkpoint statistics and should not be interpreted as the nationality breakdown of all tourists visiting Zhangjiajie.

Why Is Zhangjiajie So Popular with International Travelers?

Located in Hunan Province, central China, Zhangjiajie is famous for its extraordinary sandstone pillars, mist-covered mountains, dramatic valleys, and panoramic viewpoints.

Its distinctive landscapes have made the destination increasingly recognizable to travelers seeking natural scenery beyond China's major cities.

Some of Zhangjiajie's most memorable attractions include:

  • Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: Famous for towering sandstone formations and breathtaking mountain scenery.

  • Yuanjiajie Scenic Area: Home to the iconic pillar landscapes often associated with the floating mountains in Avatar.

  • Tianmen Mountain: Known for its dramatic mountain scenery, cableway, and natural rock arch.

  • Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon: A popular destination for visitors interested in spectacular canyon views and the glass bridge.

Together, these attractions offer a combination of natural beauty, outdoor exploration, and unforgettable photography opportunities.

Easier Entry Is Supporting International Travel to China

The strong presence of foreign travelers at Zhangjiajie's border checkpoint also reflects the role of China's expanding visa-free travel arrangements.

For eligible visitors, simplified entry procedures can make planning a China holiday more convenient.

However, visa requirements depend on each traveler's nationality, passport, itinerary, and applicable entry policy. Visitors should always confirm the latest official requirements before departure.

What Does This Mean for Travelers Planning a Zhangjiajie Trip?

Zhangjiajie's growing international profile makes it an appealing destination for travelers visiting China for the first time or returning to explore beyond Beijing and Shanghai.

For a more comfortable experience, visitors should consider their travel dates, physical fitness, and preferred pace.

A well-planned Zhangjiajie itinerary can combine the National Forest Park with Tianmen Mountain and other nearby attractions while allowing enough time for sightseeing and transportation.

Travelers interested in combining destinations may also consider visiting Zhangjiajie alongside other parts of China as part of a longer private journey.
